Help Desk (Q&A)
Who is Jesus?

Jesus lived in Roman occupied Israel between about 6 BC and 30 AD. Many events in his life were foretold by various prophets during the course of the preceding 1400 years. Because of these predictions, which are all recorded in the bible, the devout Jews were expecting a Messiah (God's chosen and appointed person) to appear soon. They knew he would be a descendent of their ancient king, David, who lived about 1000 years before.

An angel appeared to Mary, who was descended from king David, while she was still a virgin and told her that she would have a very special son. He was to be named Jesus and he would be called the Son of God. He will be conceived supernaturally, by the power of God and not through a man. When Jesus was born, angels announced his birth to certain shepherds who came and worshipped him. Later, certain wealthy, wise men came from a distant land following a heavenly sign and worshipped him and gave him costly gifts.

Many years later, John the Baptist began to preach to the Jews that they should repent of their sins and be baptized. Many regarded him as a prophet and came to be baptized by him. He declared that he was sent to prepare the way for, and to reveal to Israel, the Son of God, who would pay the price to take away the sin of the world. Later, he declared that that person was Jesus.

After that, Jesus began a powerful preaching and healing ministry. People were astonished by what he taught. He taught about sin and holiness, about heaven and hell, about God's love and forgiveness, and many other related things. He declared that he came to establish God's kingdom on earth but also that it would not be a political kingdom but a spiritual one where God ruled in people's hearts and lives. He asked people to repent of their sin and turn to God. He said he was the only way to the real God and promised immediate forgiveness and eternal life to those who believed in himself and put their trust in him.

Also, people were amazed by what Jesus did. He healed all who came to him. He cured them of illnesses, he freed them from physical and mental disabilities, he delivered them from evil spiritual powers and even raised three people from the dead. He did all this simply by a touch or by a pronouncement or command. He exercised authority over nature itself. But he never did any of this to meet his own needs or for show, but only to meet the desperate needs of others. On a few occasions, he used God's power to reveal to his disciples certain truths. It was evident that often he knew about matters supernaturally.

Jesus claimed that though he was human, he was also the Son of God. By that, he meant that he had the very nature of God and, therefore, was God. He called God his Father and said he was one with God. He said he had come from heaven and was returning there.
