Help Desk (Q&A)
What is sin? continued...
- Jesus said that not only murder but even unjust anger will be judged by God [Matt. 5:22a]. It is not only the cause of the anger that will be considered. How the anger was held; whether one contemplated or wished unjust retaliation or excessive punishment; whether one allowed hate, contempt or other evil feelings too to be held against that person; whether one took into consideration the mitigating factors that may have caused the person to do what was done; whether one took into consideration one's own faults and allowed that to temper one's judgment; all these will also be considered.
- Contempt for a person is wrong [Matt. 5:22b].
- "In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you" is the golden rule as far as one's conduct toward other people are concerned [Matt.7:12].
- Knowing what is morally right to do but not doing it, is sinful [James 4:17].
- What God requires of man is to deal fairly and truly with everyone, to be forgiving and charitable toward others, and to live in a humble relationship with God [Micah 6:8].
- These two commandments perfectly express the attitude God requires of us: "Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" [Mark 12:29-31].
The Bible teaches that the sinful acts of a man are the symptoms of a sinful nature that is present in man [Gal.5:17,19]. So our underlying problem is that we have a tendency to sin. The moral condition of not completely resisting all our sinful urges is our principal sin and is the cause of all our other sins.
When a person intentionally sins in a matter, it tends to weaken that person's resolve to resist sin, especially that type of sin. Committing sins makes it increasingly difficult to resist the sins. In time, it can lead to forming sinful habits. It also increasingly impairs one's ability to accurately make the finer distinctions between what is sin and what is not. The Bible says that those who sin, are slaves to sin. It is sin's nature to enslave those who taste it [Romans 7:21-25, 8:7,8]. There can be no escape from sin's hold, unless and until they receive God's grace and power to break free. Everyone who ever lived except Jesus sinned [Romans 3:23,24].
