Help Desk (Q&A)
WHO IS GOD?
"Who is God?" is a question that is as old as mankind. A large ocean liner would probably not contain all the volumes that have been written across the years by learned scholars attempting to answer the question. Indeed, there is no brief satisfactory answer for everyone.
In my own attempt to answer this question, I begin with the evidence. But let me state to begin with that "evidence" to the theologian may not mean precisely the same thing as it does to the scientist.
The geologist does not dig into the earth to discover the existence of the earth but to discover its characteristics. The astronomer does not study the planets to prove they exist but rather to learn what they are like.
Basing his inquiry on the assumption that "God Is" the serious theologian searches for the nature of God. The Biblical scholar allows God’s Holy Spirit, Inspired Word and written record to be his guide in quest for God. Let’s consider the following:
God has always been: "In the beginning God..." (Gen. 1:1)
God is the Creator of all things: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 1:1)
God is intelligence and order. He brought order out of chaos and created an orderly universe: "The earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep." (Gen.1:2)
The universe exists and is orderly so a God of order must hold it in place.
God called His creation "good" consequently God must surely be good.
God has a personal interest in His creation. He blessed his creation and said to the creatures, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." (Gen. 1:22)
When man disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, God banished him from the Garden. Hence, God is righteous.
