What is sin?

What is Sin? Sin is a term for moral evil used in the Holy Bible. It refers to a moral condition of the soul and its effects, which offend God.

The Bible says that God is intrinsically holy [Lev.19:2; Rev.15:3,4]. It means he is morally perfect and has absolute standards of right and wrong [Ex.32:4; Psalm 18:30]. He always thinks, speaks and acts in accordance with his perfect principles and standards [Psalm 145:17]. Holiness is one of God's greatest attributes (i.e. qualities). It keeps all his other moral attributes and his power in perfect balance and under control. For example, God's love may move him to want to do good to someone. But he will never do anything that is unwise or that will compromise his justice or his other principles. Similarly, God is perfectly just and will unfailingly enforce justice and move to punish the wrongdoer. Yet his love will still seek to do whatever good he can wisely do in the circumstances. He will always act consistently with all his attributes.

If we do anything that God considers to be wrong, it is a sin. It could be an act, or a word or just a thought. But the motive behind our thought, word or deed is also important to God. Sometimes, the same word or deed could be said or done with a different motive in two different situations. In the one it might be commendable but in the other it might be a sin.

The Bible is our God-given guide as to what is right and what is wrong. One has to learn from all of it, not just from a part [Psalm 119:1-16]. The following give a very brief insight into the subject.

  • The Ten Commandments were given to Israel as a summary of the principles of right conduct. [Look up The BIG Ten.] Four of the commandments addressed man's behavior in relation to God and, the rest, man's behavior in relation to people.

  • Idolatry, witchcraft, murder, theft, sexual immorality, impurity, lewdness, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, debauchery, greed, malice, deceit, envy, slander, arrogance, folly, hypocrisy, and evil thoughts are all sins [Gal. 5:19-21, Mark 7:20-22, Matt.7:1-5]. This list is by no means exhaustive.

  • God's standards are very high. Jesus said that even looking at a woman lustfully is a sin, because one has committed adultery in one's thoughts [Matt. 5:27,28].

  • Jesus said that not only murder but even unjust anger will be judged by God [Matt. 5:22a]. It is not only the cause of the anger that will be considered. How the anger was held; whether one contemplated or wished unjust retaliation or excessive punishment; whether one allowed hate, contempt or other evil feelings too to be held against that person; whether one took into consideration the mitigating factors that may have caused the person to do what was done; whether one took into consideration one's own faults and allowed that to temper one's judgment; all these will also be considered.

  • Contempt for a person is wrong [Matt. 5:22b].

  • "In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you" is the golden rule as far as one's conduct toward other people are concerned [Matt.7:12].

  • Knowing what is morally right to do but not doing it, is sinful [James 4:17].

  • What God requires of man is to deal fairly and truly with everyone, to be forgiving and charitable toward others, and to live in a humble relationship with God [Micah 6:8].

  • These two commandments perfectly express the attitude God requires of us: "Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" [Mark 12:29-31].

The Bible teaches that the sinful acts of a man are the symptoms of a sinful nature that is present in man [Gal.5:17,19]. So our underlying problem is that we have a tendency to sin. The moral condition of not completely resisting all our sinful urges is our principal sin and is the cause of all our other sins.

When a person intentionally sins in a matter, it tends to weaken that person's resolve to resist sin, especially that type of sin. Committing sins makes it increasingly difficult to resist the sins. In time, it can lead to forming sinful habits. It also increasingly impairs one's ability to accurately make the finer distinctions between what is sin and what is not. The Bible says that those who sin, are slaves to sin. It is sin's nature to enslave those who taste it [Romans 7:21-25, 8:7,8]. There can be no escape from sin's hold, unless and until they receive God's grace and power to break free. Everyone who ever lived except Jesus sinned [Romans 3:23,24].
