Who is God?

Complete Listing of Topics/Questions

"Who is God?" is a question that is as old as mankind. A large ocean liner would probably not contain all the volumes that have been written across the years by learned scholars attempting to answer the question. Indeed, there is no brief satisfactory answer for everyone.

In my own attempt to answer this question, I begin with the evidence. But let me state to begin with that "evidence" to the theologian may not mean precisely the same thing as it does to the scientist.

The geologist does not dig into the earth to discover the existence of the earth but to discover its characteristics. The astronomer does not study the planets to prove they exist but rather to learn what they are like.

Basing his inquiry on the assumption that "God Is" the serious theologian searches for the nature of God. The Biblical scholar allows God’s Holy Spirit, Inspired Word and written record to be his guide in quest for God. Let’s consider the following:

  1. God has always been: "In the beginning God..." (Gen. 1:1)

  2. God is the Creator of all things: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gen. 1:1)

  3. God is intelligence and order. He brought order out of chaos and created an orderly universe: "The earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep." (Gen.1:2)

  4. The universe exists and is orderly so a God of order must hold it in place.

  5. God called His creation "good" consequently God must surely be good.

  6. God has a personal interest in His creation. He blessed his creation and said to the creatures, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." (Gen. 1:22)

  7. When man disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, God banished him from the Garden. Hence, God is righteous.

  8. God is love because, even after man had sinned, God lovingly provided for his salvation by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for us.

  9. God is Spirit. At Jerusalem on Pentecost, God empowered His church by the outpouring of His Holy Spirit.

  10. In our lives, we have the best answer of all as to whom God is. He is our Savior who resides in our hearts and save us from sin.

The God of the Bible is Creator of all life and sustainer of the universe. This one God, who is the source and final end of all things, takes the initiative to seek with love all humankind, entering into covenants with those who respond, and behaving toward them with justice and mercy, with judgement and forgiveness. God has never left himself without witness in the world, having revealed himself in many times, manners, and places; but the New Testament claims in Jesus of Nazareth a unique revelation of God. The person, words, and activity were understood as bringing followers into the presence of of God.
